National Social Work Month: Compassion Plus Action
March is National Social Work Month, a time to recognize and celebrate the vital role of social workers in our communities. This year’s theme, “Compassion Plus Action,” highlights the unique combination of empathy and expertise that social workers bring to their work.
Social workers are knowledgeable professionals who have a deep understanding of human behavior, social policies, and overarching systems. They use this knowledge to assess, inform, support, educate, advocate and so much more. Social workers possess expertise in multiple fields and may be identified in various settings from community mental health centers all the way to congressional legislation and everywhere in between.
As I reflect back on my own journey, it feels most true that social work chose me, and I am honored to have answered the call in service to the raw human condition. The journey that led me to become a clinical social worker was fueled by a deep sense of compassion and a desire to make a positive impact in the world around me. As a macro systems thinker and holistic practitioner, social work is more than just a profession; it is a way of life. It is about embodying the values of honor, pride, and integrity in my daily interactions and striving to make positive and sustainable changes in local and global ways. I am committed to a resilience model and believe that whole life wellness isn’t just possible, rather it is probably given the nature of the determined human spirit.
National Social Work Month is an opportunity to celebrate the important work of social workers and to raise awareness of the profession. If you know a social worker, take some time this month to thank them for their dedication and service. To my own colleagues out there doing the good work, I offer you my most sincere gratitude and respect. Thank you for shining your lights in the world so that others may find you.
