Community Connection: River Clean Up with NeuroDev

August 13, 2025

In a remarkable display of community spirit and environmental stewardship, LifeTutors and NeuroDev joined forces with Asheville RiverKeepers for an impactful river cleanup event along the Swannanoa and French Broad Rivers. This collaborative effort was a crucial component of ongoing relief efforts for Hurricane Helene, demonstrating how programs and organizations can unite to address both immediate and long-term community needs.

The day saw over a dozen volunteers from both LifeTutors and NeuroDev, alongside experienced RiverKeepers staff converge on various points along two of the most impacted areas of our region in Western North Carolina. Armed with gloves, trash bags, canoes and a shared commitment to environmental health, they meticulously removed an impressive volume of debris, including plastic bottles, discarded tires, styrofoam, wheel barrows, shopping carts and other pollutants that had been deposited by recent floodwaters from Hurricane Helene.

This initiative was not just about removing trash; it was a powerful statement about collective responsibility and the importance of preserving natural resources and supporting communities at large. The French Broad River is a vital ecosystem and a cherished recreational area for the Asheville community, its health is directly linked to the well-being of the region. By engaging in hands-on cleanup, volunteers gained a deeper appreciation for the river’s ecological significance and the ongoing threats it faces.

LifeTutors, known for its commitment to community collaboration, emphasized the therapeutic and team-building aspects of the cleanup. “It’s incredibly rewarding to see our teams come together for such a vital cause,” said Andrea Morris, executive director of LifeTutors. “Beyond the physical act of cleaning, events like these foster a sense of unity and shared purpose, which is essential for community resilience, especially in the wake of natural disasters like Hurricane Helene.”

NeuroDev, a leading organization in developmental support, highlighted the cognitive and sensory benefits of engaging in outdoor, community-oriented activities. “Participating in an event like this provides a unique opportunity for individuals to connect with the natural world and contribute meaningfully to a community in need,” a NeuroDev spokesperson stated. “It’s a fantastic way to promote physical activity, teamwork, and an understanding of environmental impact.”

Asheville RiverKeepers, a non-profit dedicated to protecting the French Broad River, provided invaluable logistical support, equipment, and expert guidance. Their deep knowledge of the river and its ecological needs ensured that the cleanup was conducted safely and effectively, maximizing its positive impact. “The energy and dedication from LifeTutors and NeuroDev volunteers were truly inspiring,” commented a representative from Asheville RiverKeepers. “Their commitment significantly amplified our ongoing efforts to keep the French Broad clean and healthy for everyone.”

The success of Saturday’s cleanup underscores the power of inter-organizational collaboration in times of need. It serves as a testament to the Asheville community’s unwavering spirit and its proactive approach to environmental stewardship, demonstrating that even amidst recovery efforts from significant events like Hurricane Helene, the commitment to preserving local natural treasures remains strong. We hope this event will inspire further community involvement in similar initiatives, fostering a long-term commitment to the health and vitality of our environment as well as the importance of community collaboration, regardless of where we call home in the world.
