Navigating the “Coaching Lane”

Have you ever wondered about the difference between coaching, counseling, and therapy? It’s a question many people grapple with, especially when seeking support for personal growth. At LifeTutors, we believe in clarity and understanding, particularly when it comes to defining “The Coaching Lane”.

Coaching, in its essence, is about empowering individuals to determine and reach their goals. It’s a collaborative journey using proven tools and strategies to create lasting change together. While our approach is clinically-informed, we want to emphasize what coaching is not. We do not diagnose, “pathologize,” or treat specific symptoms. Instead, we meet individuals where they are, providing insights and helping them discover their own strengths-based path forward.

One crucial aspect of our coaching model is open communication. We actively involve ancillary providers such as therapists, psychiatrists, nutritionists, and family members. We ensure everyone stays connected through a weekly coaching update. This update, addressed to the young adult, outlines current goals, actions taken, and progress made. It’s more than just an update; it’s an invitation to a supportive conversation.

It’s vital to understand the boundaries of coaching. Within our coaching, we utilize techniques such as reflective listening, identifying patterns, developing supportive routines, and asking probing questions. We assist in identifying resources, clarifying goals, and affirming autonomy. We also assess the potential for harm to self or others.

However, there are specific activities that fall outside the scope of coaching. We do not provide therapy, open emotional wounds, focus heavily on the past, or lead with our own agenda. We avoid telling individuals “the best” way to do something or offering personal supports such as groups or social gatherings. We don’t manage crises or engage in interventions that might trigger traumas.

Why are these distinctions important? Knowing where our experience and training qualify us to provide guidance leads to less ambiguity. If we ever wonder if a topic is on or off-limits, we pause the conversation and seek guidance from leadership.

Coaching works best when we understand its purpose: to support individuals in becoming the version of themselves they are striving to be. It takes a village, and we value our collaborative approach, witnessing stronger and longer-lasting outcomes as a result.

If you’re curious about how coaching can support your journey, we’re here to help provide clarity and guidance…while assuredly staying in our lane!
