Connection and Support through Helene
In the early days following Hurricane Helene, there were spots few and far between for folks to access cell service. Along the ridge line of Riverview Drive in Asheville was one such spot; a hot spot of connection, of perspective and a place for holding hope that help was on the way.
Today, in the same spot, there stands a community gate, overlooking the flooded river banks; made from the very branches downed by the storm. Community members add messages to the gate as they walk past, encouraging continued hope and a deeper sense of connection through shared experiences. One that struck us in particular was the message above: “CommUnity will see us through.”
Our teams in the WNC area continue to work in community, supporting relief efforts throughout the region. Staff, coaches and program participants have removed trees, cleaned riverbanks, shared skills and resources with our local health departments, food banks and shelters, delivered goods to remote communities, donated funds, supported small businesses and more. And yet, we know there is much more to do ahead on this road to recovery.
We remain committed to our WNC community with our hearts and our actions, much as we remain committed to our young adults and families across the nation. We recognize that recovery and long-standing change is more akin to a marathon, rather than a sprint.
We’re here for it.
